I found these pavers on Craigslist several years ago and promptly bought 10 pallets of 350 bricks. We didn't need that many pavers and we still have around 1,000 on hand, just waiting to be incorporated in a new project. I do find it comforting just knowing they are there for whenever I'm ready for the next project. They were used to create our brick patio and I used them to create all of the garden paths in our backyard. They weigh about 10 pounds each!
I had so many bricks to work with that I created a lower layer foundation out of the pavers. Befor I placed the lower level of pavers I put down a layer of landscape fabric. Once the first layer was set, I locked them in place with gravel and a thick layer of sand. Then I added a second layer of pavers on top, followed by more sand and gravel to keep them snug. Finally I infilled dirt around them and wet everything down to further solidify the paths.
I created the first path using this method 3 years ago. I've been really happy with how they've stayed in place and due to the double layer, weeds have a hard time finding a way to grow. The paths are stable, low-maintenance and have ton of character.
One important note is that I wasn't trying to make the paths 'perfect'. Our patio is as close to perfect as you can get, as we had a very skilled masonry team install it. But I wanted to create the paths myself with just the right curvature and I needed to do it over time as each area of the garden evolved. They are far from perfect, but they are highly functional and beautiful.
